Accurate Measuring for Perfect-Fit Motorized Roller Shades

To ensure your motorized roller shades fit perfectly and operate smoothly, accurate measurements are crucial. Follow our step-by-step guide to measure your windows correctly for both inside and outside mounts.

Gather Your Tools

Tools You’ll Need

Before you start measuring, make sure you have the following tools.

Measuring for Inside Mounts

Installing motorized roller shades with an inside mount gives a clean, streamlined look that fits neatly within your window frame. Follow these steps to ensure accurate measurements for a perfect fit.

Step 1: Measure the Window Width

- Measure the width of the window opening at the top and record the measurement.

- Ensure to measure from inside edge to inside edge.

Step 2: Measure the Window Height

- Measure the height of the window opening from the top inside edge to the window sill or bottom edge of the opening.

- Record the measurement at the left, middle, and right sides. Use the shortest measurement.

Step 3: Check for Obstructions

- Check for any obstructions inside the window frame, such as handles, moldings, or cranks, that might interfere with the operation of the shades.

- Measure the distance from the top of the window opening to any obstructions to ensure the shades will fit properly.

Measuring for Outside Mounts

An outside mount installation of motorized roller shades is ideal for maximizing light control and covering window trim. This style also makes your windows appear larger and is perfect for shallow or uneven window frames. Follow these steps to get the right measurements for an outside mount.

Step 1: Measure the Width

- Measure the desired width outside the window frame, including any additional space needed to cover the window completely.

- For full coverage, extend the measurement 2-3 inches beyond each side of the window frame.

Step 2: Measure the Height

- Measure the height from the top of where you want the shade to start to the point where you want it to end.

- Ensure the measurement extends beyond the window frame to cover the window adequately.

Step 3: Consider Mounting Space

- Measure the space above the window for mounting the brackets. Ensure there is enough clearance for the shades to operate without obstruction.

- Measure the depth of the mounting area to ensure the brackets can be securely installed.

Helpful Tips

Measuring Tips and Tricks

For the most accurate measurements, follow these tips.

Measure More Than Once

Always take multiple measurements (at least three) for width and height to ensure accuracy. This helps account for any variations in your window frame and ensures a perfect fit.

Use a Metal Measuring Tape

A metal measuring tape is more rigid and accurate than a cloth or plastic tape. It’s less likely to bend or stretch, providing more precise measurements.

Check Window Frame Level

Ensure your window frame is level by using a level tool. If the frame is not level, it can affect the alignment and operation of your shades.

Take Notes and Photos

As you measure, take detailed notes and photos of your window and measurements. This can be useful when placing your order or if you need to consult with our team for further assistance.
